firstly, please forgive my use of english. i am writing from Scotland and read this forum with help from google translate.

i am new to nordic skiing and i am now looking at buying my first set of rollerskis (rullskidor?) i have had lessons on skis in the classic technique but most rolerskis appear to be for the skate technique.

having searched the internet, (english written sites) most say that classic rollerskis can develope bad habbits and technique; late kick.

so, are classic style rollerskis good for training in classic technique?

many thanks and once again my apologies for having to use english.

most people on this forum probably believe that rollerskis could develop bad habits, but it doesn't have to. It is better to ski on snow than with rollerskis:) but I believe that it is better to use rollerskis compared to do nothing. It is no risk destroing your technique if you only use your poles/ best regards

thank you Klas. we have very little snow here in Scotland. it lasts days rather than months. like you i would have thought that any skiing is better than no skiing, and a poor technique is better than having to start from the begining every year.

i have seen clips on youtube of people clasic skiing on rolllerskis and their technique looks quite good. i am able to use a 'dry' track every so often so the roller skis would be to keep in shape and improve balance, poling etc in between visits.

Put it like this. Some parts of your technique will maybe be 5% worse But your musculur strenght and endurance in the exact correct muscles will be many times (over 100 % ) better if you use classic rollerskis instead of running/cycling. Compare to no training your vascular capacity will be many times better. So your overall performance level will definitely increase with classical rollerskis. Some winters we don't have snow in soutern Sweden either and the we only use rollerski with good results.

Sorry to say I never used skis or rollerskis in Scotland when I was there but at least I climbed the highest mountain Ben Nevis!

thank you Everest. this is what i was hoping to hear. after many years of cycle racing i know about specificity in training, and i have quickly learnt that nordic skiing places very high demands on you!

i did hope that there would be some improvement in my technique (better than doing nothing) and that an improved fitness level would also help come the winter.

The main bad habit that tend to develop is to kick backwards instead of downwards, due to having too perfect "grip" on rollerskis, while you have to push skis down to "engage" the grip-wax when on snow before you can start pushing off. For me it was enough to consciously keep that in mind when rollerskiing in order to keep this tendency under control, others argue that it is good to put the rear wheels in front with the idea that this puts more emphasis on pushing the kick more downwards (this idea never occurred to me so I can only say that it sounds like a helpful trick.)

Also to chime in with the others, roller-skiing keeps your specific fitness up and the bad habits you pick up are a way smaller problem than the other gains (even balance and technique in general are better with than without). Where I lived I had ~4.5 months of roller-skiing and when the snow came I often felt that the technique were absolutely awful (larger problem in skate) for the first couple of sessions, but things used to come together after a couple of days...
